Agile goes to the shrink

Level: Introductory

One sense to rule them all…

Among our five senses, NLP says we use one favourite channel to learn and communicate.
TA describes games people play.

Two concepts you can apply to your project for better efficiency and to sustain your team.

Far from the myths about NLP from Tv Series like CSI or The Mentalist. We will learn how to fix a problem, effectively give recognition, motivate people and better communicate.

Each of these concepts will be linked to concrete Agile Methods.

Find your effective channel, and other’s.
Learn to leave your superman costume in the closet.

Process/Mechanics

4 main concepts will be presented :

  1. Among our 5 senses, each individual uses a main sense : ‘“visual”, “auditive” or “kinesthetic”
  2. Our main channel (sense) has an influence on the way we communicate or the way we receive the communication, and our collaboration with others.
  3. We keep on playing (un)consciously a role. This act is called the Drama Triangle : Victims, Rescuers and Persecutors
  4. Playing the Drama Triangle can affect the project and we should try to act outside the frame.

During the session, each item below is discussed interactively with the audience

Roadmap

5’ Presentation – Today’s Objectives – Agenda

FIRST PART

5’ Introduction on NLP
As opposed to some psychological beliefs, which focus on “where does the problem stand?”, NLP focuses on ‘Why does this solution work?’ and ‘How to reproduce it?’

10’ Short workshop : I create groups of 2 people. The aim of this exercise is to identify the main sense used to communicate.
I provide them a list of questions and ask each other.

For example:
Q: How do you thank someone ?
Examples of answers:
- by saying ‘Thank you’ => Auditive
- by offering a gift => Visual
- by Thanking the person in public during a speech => Kinesthetic

By the end of this workshop, we will identify our main sense, and discover that we expect from others to express a recognition the way we would give them (by using the same sense)

In the next part, and based from the input of the previous one, I will present:

5’ Definition of ‘“visual”, “auditive” or “kinesthetic” = VAK

Among our 5 senses, each individual has a main sense. It can be ‘“visual” “auditive” or “kinesthetic” (touch, sense of smell, and taste)
Our main channel has an influence on the way we communicate or the way we receive the communication, and our collaboration with others.

10’ Description and characteristics of someone “visual” “auditive” and “kinesthetic” Some exercises are done using each sense.
For example : Applause on a “visual” “auditive” and “kinesthetic” way

10’ What is my sense? What does it imply for me ? for the team ? What is each team member’s VAK ?

10’ Why is the VAK useful in Agile ?
Many tools and concepts of AGILE use the VAK. And that may be a reason why AGILE has become so efficient. For example, the daily meeting implies using the 3 senses :
- “auditive” => talk
- “visual” => scrum board
- “kinesthetic” => interaction with others

SECOND PART

This part is about the Drama Triangle
The model posits three habitual psychological roles (or roleplays) which people often take in a situation:

  • The person who is treated as, or accepts the role of, a victim
  • The person who pressures, coerces or persecutes the victim, and
  • The rescuer, who intervenes out of an ostensible wish to help the situation or the underdog.

5’ I present a film sequence where people play (un)consciously an act.
For example : A complains to B, he can’t go to the cinema, because of his younger son to keep at home (Victim), B tries to find solutions (Rescuer) => this is a representation of the Drama Triangle.

10’ Presentation : Victims, Rescuers and Persecutors Why do we play these roles ? Why do we need to play ? What can be the negative impact within a team ?

10’ Workshop : I create groups of 2 people, Example 1: A plays the Rescuer, B plays the Victim. A tries not to save.
Example 2 : A plays a Persecutor to B, the Victim. B tries not to be persecuted

10’ Conclusion on how to avoid playing the Drama Triangle

Ps: This session has been given:
- as a Keynote at Agile France Conference 2010
- as a Session at French Scrum User Group 1st birthday 2010

Learning outcomes
  • Using 2 psychology Tools from NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) and TA (Transactional Analysis), you will learn:
  • How do you perceive the world around us
  • How to communicate with an higher impact
  • The games we unconsciously plays and how to deal with them
  • How to accurately give recognition
